One collar that speaks in one voice

%name One collar that speaks in one voice
Few years back, I led a delegation to #Japan from our company and visited one of its fastest growing engineering companies. Apart from me, there were four others who accompanied me on this trip.

Upon arrival into #Tokyo, we made our way to their plants and we were greeted by a company representative, who walked us through their plants. He explained the company’s strategy, talked passionately about several initiatives that led to cost reduction and increase in productivity. He seemed very knowledgeable about the economy, about the competitive environment  in Japan and around the world. He also was very clear about the company’s future  strategy and initiatives that were implemented across the organisation to help them realise the envisioned future.

Once the plant visit was done, he walked us towards the managing director’s  office.   And we all thanked him and complemented him for his comprehensive tour. He came across as a  passionate man,  a proud employee  and  a proud  Japanese.  Two deadly combinations indeed!!

At this stage I realised that we had not exchanged our visiting cards (I kicked myself for having missed out on this courtesy) and so, I quickly reached for my card and asked for his. When he handed me  his visiting card,  I froze for a few seconds and had to centre myself to believe what I had just read on the card, which said ” President  Union Body”.

This experience is truly one of the most incredible ones in my professional life!! To meet a Union President who represents the union body  and speaks on behalf of the company’s management to a delegation from an overseas country! This is as flat an organisation can get! Simply brilliant…. Japan is where they are today because of the culture and their  focus on collective productivity.

I shared the above story with our union leaders recently and asked them to imbibe and look at this story as their role model and we agreed to take our first step together on this.

In November 2013, #Escorts launches its  world series of tractor for the world market . This launch is planned in a fair which is one of the largest #agricultural fairs in the world. We see some of the most well known names across the world participate in this fair.

We will have our partner dealers from across the EU, which will be around  hundred plus dealers for this launch and I see no reason why our union leaders  should miss this event! This event will allow  them to see what the world has to offer and what we need to do to meet both our and the worlds expectations. No better start than this!

The promise that I have taken from the union is that, after visiting the fair in Europe ,  ” THEY”   will make a presentation to all our workmen  and talk about their perspective of their learning and talk about the products and applications that are coming to the farm lands in  the world markets.

Our journey starts when we collectively see the opportunity and understand it. To have our Union present the world opportunity is the beginning of a very powerful start of a culture in our company.

At the end, I leave you with one of my beliefs … ” In my eyes there is no blue or white collar, but  only one collar  and that is an Escorts collar”.

So all the executives out there, if you have passion, energy and want to realise your dreams, then come and wear our collar!!

    Great Sir!
Making union participation will boost business! And simply spending time together, by broadening the scope of discussions, identifying common interests you will be able to grow relationships with union leaders!
